  1. Editorial

As announced in Newsletter No.1 one day's worth of CHAMP instrument data is made available to the community for first use. The sample data set comprises GPS-CHAMP satellite-to-satellite tracking, accelerometer, star camera and scalar and vector magnetometer data. For geolocation, a CHAMP orbit file is provided together with the data.

Radio occultation data will have to be provided at a later date, because the required JPL GPS software update is not yet available for uploading. The same holds for the Digital Ion Drift Meter because AFRL is still investigating a suitable measurement mode.

The release of these sample data shall enable the users to get acquainted with the formats, structures and characteristics of the CHAMP standard product files, being regularly accessible after spring next year with the end of CHAMP's calibration and accomodation phase. It has to be noted that the given data still have to be considered as engineering ones, i.e. the evaluation of the data quality, preprocessing and data editing procedures are still under investigation and in progress. Also, the accuracy of the provided CHAMP orbit does not yet reflect the ongoing process of optimising CHAMP's precise orbit determination.

We have tried to provide all information needed to process the data. We would ask the users not to contact the CHAMP project staff with detailed questions, but use the IGS Leo Pilot Project Meeting end of January 2001 for necessary clarification.

    Christoph Reigber, CHAMP Project Director

  2. CHAMP sample data set

The sample products contain CHAMP data from day 220 in 2000 (August 7, 2000). The data files, format descriptions and conventions are available via anonymous ftp from GFZ's ftp server.

  3. Official COSPAR number for CHAMP

The official CHAMP COSPAR number has been fixed to 2000-039B (for ILRS: 0003902) on November 22, 2000. On December 5, 2000 00:00:00 UTC the COSPAR number for CHAMP has been adopted in the CHAMP orbit prediction products generated at GFZ; December 5, 2000 00:00:00 UTC
